The construction of the shopping and business lifestyle center Cascade in Tkalčićeva Street in Zagreb was carried out on a hilly terrain, and for that reason it was designed in a stepped, i.e. cascaded fashion. The center is spread over three terraces where the floors are connected by open passageways with a glass roof and slanted steel columns at the top, where a two-story walkway connects the Cascade center with the Kaptol center. On the ground floor and first floor, the complex rests on reinforced concrete structures in the form of massive diagonally placed columns, and below the ground floor there are two underground floors with garages.
The dynamic stepped shape of the complex on slanting columns is emphasized by three deep openings on the street part of the facade and four S-shaped arms on the courtyard part, and it is colorfully enriched by the use of reddish filtering bricks on the exterior parts of the building. Although very innovative and modern, this project relies on tradition and in its form imitates the gardens, vineyards and terraces characteristic of this part of the city in the past.
